My username and/or my password don't work. What can I do?

Sometimes, there's a misunderstanding between the Joli OS credentials and the Jolicloud desktop credentials:

The Joli OS credentials

When you install Joli OS, you choose a login and a password for your device. By default, you use them everytime you log on to this device. You also need to enter your password after exiting the screensaver or when you reopen your laptop after closing the lid. Note you can setup the auto-login if youd' like.

If you just don't remember your username, you can retrieve the list of user accounts from the guest mode:

  • Start your computer
  • Log in as guest (more details)
  • Open a terminal with Alt + F1 (more details)
  • Type "cat /etc/passwd" (without the quotes)

Your username should be displayed at the end of the output.

If your password doesn't work at this step:

  • Make sure you're not using Caps Lock or Num Lock keys
  • Make sure you're correctly typing your password with the username field
  • Your keyboard layout is maybe not correctly setup. You can change it via the Local Settings folder (Keyboard settings) once logged in for the next time.

If it still doesn't work, unfortunately, there's no easy way to retrieve a system password for the time being.

The best option is to:

  1. Boot a live session
  2. Access the home directory (check this topic for useful instructions)
  3. Backup your files
  4. Reinstall Joli OS

 

Note: If you just need to access your desktop, you can log in as guest.

The web credentials

If you don't login with Facebook to your Jolicloud desktop, the one available at my.jolicloud.com, you also choose a login and a password when you create your web account.

If your username and/or your password don't work at this step:

  • Make sure you're not using Caps Lock or Num Lock keys
  • Make sure you're correctly typing your password with the username field
  • If you're on Joli OS, try the same things at my.jolicloud.com with any broswer.


If it still doesn't work, just click on 'Forgot password?' and follow the instructions.

Note: We won't retrieve your password for privacy concerns.
